Things to Keep in Mind When Designing a Logo

A logo is usually one of the most identifiable symbols of any organization. If you want one for your business or personal use for branding, you must make sure you come up with the right design. A good logo can determine how visible and recognizable your brand will be amongst consumers and amidst competitors.

There are certain things you must keep in mind when designing a logo. These factors will determine how successful your logo is for your branding purposes.

Your logo must be unique. You cannot afford to have an identifying symbol that looks like existing logos. Being identified as a copycat is never a good thing for business.

When designing your logo, determine what it is that makes your business, business names, and ideas different from everyone else. Use all that to come up with something that's truly yours. Remember, if you pit a copycat logo against an existing one you are not only risking obscurity but also you may also be sued for copyright infringement.

A good logo is a memorable one. The symbol you choose to represent your brand must be able to stick easily in the minds of the people that you intend to market to. That way, they can easily identify and remember that symbol whenever they come across it.

A logo that does not truly represent what your business is about will fall flat on its face. That is something that you do not want to happen.

Your logo needs to be relevant. It must truthfully represent what your business is about and what it stands for. For example, if your business is about enhancing fitness, using a symbol of a shovel or rake is definitely going in the wrong direction. Those items have more to do with gardening than fitness. On the other hand, a silhouette symbol of people working out is definitely the right idea.

The more complex and intricate your logo design is, the harder it will be to print. Your logo should be simple in terms of design and color. In fact, the more colors your logo has, the more difficult and expensive it will be to print and replicate each time. This is always good for your bottom line. In addition, a simpler design is much easier to identify and just as memorable.

Reversibility in this case refers to the ability of your logo to look good whether it is printed black on white, white on black, or using color. That way, the design will look good and consistent whether it is printed in color or black and white only. Consistency is key to effective branding.

Scalability is one of the most important factors for you to consider when designing logos. Your logo should be scalable, which means that it should look the same whether printed on a large surface or small one. People should be able to identify it whether it's printed on a business card or a highway billboard.

If your logo design looks skewed when compressed or enlarged, it will affect how people perceive it. That is something that you want to avoid.

You need to consider all these factors when designing a logo. It will be difficult and very costly to change it once it is done and introduced to the market, so take your time and come up with something that fulfills all the major requirements.
