I'm looking for a visitor bench seat and overnight sofa bed designed for hospital use. This piece should function equally as seating during the day and sleeping at night. Key Requirements: - Materials: Vinyl upholstery - Primary Function: Equally serve as seating during the day and sleeping at night - Important Aspect: Must prioritize ease of cleaning Purpose Design and manufacture a hospital-grade visitor bench that functions as comfortable seating for up to three visitors during the day and easily converts into an overnight bed for a patient's family member or support person. Functional Requirements • Suitable for use in hospital and healthcare environments. • Infection control compliant with smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces and minimal dirt traps. • Provides seating for up to three adults during normal use. • Converts into a comfortable overnight bed with a minimum lying surface length of 2,000 mm. • Incorporates a slide-out mechanism that increases the seat depth from approximately 460 mm to 800 mm, creating the sleeping platform while maintaining a comfortable seat depth for everyday use. • Conversion between seat and bed must be simple, intuitive, and require minimal physical effort to meet manual handling requirements. • Heavy-duty construction with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 250 kg. • Includes integrated storage drawers beneath the seating area for visitor belongings. • Mounted on heavy-duty lockable braking castors to allow easy relocation while remaining secure during use. • Upholstered in durable, healthcare-grade vinyl that is resistant to wear, fluids, and hospital cleaning chemicals. Design Considerations • Standard seating depth and height should remain comfortable for daytime visitor use; therefore, the seat should not have a permanently oversized depth. • The slide-out sleeping platform should provide additional depth only when the bed function is required. • Mechanism should be robust, reliable, and designed for frequent daily operation. • Edges and moving components should minimise pinch points and support safe operation. • Overall appearance should complement contemporary hospital furniture and patient room environments. Reference Product The Custom Sleepover Ottoman by Dalcross demonstrates a similar concept; however, its overall seating depth is greater than desired for general visitor seating. The preferred solution is a design incorporating a slide-out extension that maintains a standard seating depth during normal use while providing a full sleeping surface when extended.
