What is this assessment?

This assessment task encourages you to critically reflect on all that you read. Throughout weeks 3-8 you will each develop an online online reponse folio (collection) consisting of at least:

• two critical reflections on scholarly readings (a maximum of 600 words each)

• two critical reflections on theory (a maximum of 600 words each)

• two critical dialogues on colleagues' critical reflections (a maximum of 300 words each)

How to do this assessment

Reflecting on your readings is a good practice that can help you gain additional value from written materials. This process, known as the 4Rs, enables you to think about the reading more deeply than if you were just summarising the main points. The 4Rs stand for Recall, Relate, Respond and Redesign. Complete a separate reflection for each reading. Each book chapter, report or web site can be regarded as a different reading. As part of your assessment you must share at least two reflections on readings, two reflections on theory and two critical dialogues with your fellow students during the semester. If possible you may want to complete reflections on readings every week.

The four sections of your critical reflections on readings (~600 words total) will be:

1. Recall: Describe three key points from the reading that you found of interest.

2. Relate: Identify and briefly explain the main public health concept(s) in the reading.

3. Respond: Why do you think it is important for you to know about the content of the reading? What elements of this reading are relevant to your discipline?

4. Redesign: How can you use what you have learned about public health from this reading in the future (both professional and/or personal)? Is there a social justice perspective to be considered?

The four sections of your critical reflections on theory (~600 words) will be:

1. Recall: Describe some key elements of the selected theory that you found interesting.

2. Relate: What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the theory? How does this theory relate to public health practice in your discipline?

3. Respond: Why do you think it is important for you to know about this theory as a future professional in your discipline?

4. Redesign: Explain how you could use this theory or some elements of this theory in your future practice using an example.

Ideas for a public health theory or concept should come from what has been covered or introduced in the course so far via your readings and lectures. However, if you are having problems deciding on a public health theory or concept here are some ideas:

•ecological science

•ecosystem models of health

•new public health

•globalisation and public health

•sustainability and public health

•public health paradigms

•salutogenesis

•inequities and inequalities

•health determinants, epidemiology

•healthism

You are welcome to pick an alternative public health theory/concept if you wish.

You will require 3 to 4 references including your text book. Please pay attention to the accuracy of in-text referencing and the reference list. Vancouver Referencing Style is required.

Please have your draft reflection completed for week 6 to share either on-line for on-line students or in-class for on campus students.

The four sections of your critical dialogue (~300 words) on a colleague’s reflection will be:
