Objective: To identify and explore communication concepts and guidelines and examine and implement the identified utility in your interpersonal relationships. For this project, you will select an interpersonal relationship for analysis and critique. In business and in life you will meet “difficult” personalities. These are the people you dread to work with or see, know how to push your buttons, and/or make you generally miserable. Unfortunately, the true test of your communication skills is in how you handle people you would prefer not to even speak to. The art is to be as ethical and civil in your communication as possible, remain calm, never let your true feelings show, and remain professional. Who is this person for you? They may be the key in helping you to become a great communicator. In this paper you will identify at least 8 separate aspects of interpersonal communication and apply them to this one relationship. You may choose any concepts from Chapters 1-16 (although we will not fully discuss all these chapters by the time this paper is due you are welcome to use concepts that may apply). Your mission is as follows: In 1 page or less answer the following: Who is this person? What is the nature of your relationship? How did you meet? How long have you known them? Was there a critical event that made you feel the way you do? There is no need to give me details you wouldn’t otherwise share. In 4-5 pages choose 2 major concepts and a minimum of 3 minor, no more than 4 minor concepts of communication for EACH major concept (examples: major non-verbal elements, verbal elements, creation of the self, conflict, group communication, perception, or listening and more. Examples of minor: within non-verbal—use Haptics, eye contact etc.). Specifically state and clearly define the concepts. Using this relationship, explore your chosen concepts in order to demonstrate your understanding of the material. How did/does your communication style effect this relationship? Negatively? Positively? How did/does their style effect the relationship? Can these elements be seen clearly or did you have to dig a little? In 1 or less using the text’s recommendations as a guideline for improving your communication skill, develop a game plan for communicating with this person, or similar personalities, in the future. Do these concepts help you to make sense of this relationship? In the future what can you do differently? How do you think this plan will effect this relationship in the future? In 1 page or less **Optional- if you see this person regularly and can employ your new strategy, explain how this strategy worked or didn’t work in your interaction. How would you change your approach? Complete paper is 5-7 pages of text. (The last page will be your bibliography.) Considerations Papers are to be 12pt. Times New Roman or Arial font, 1-inch margins on all sides, double-spaced, and numbered pages. A cover page including your name, unique title and date of assignment must be included and stapled to the front. When referencing text, including our textbook, use APA format. You are not required to use additional sources. BOLD all the major and minor concepts each time you use them.
