I have extensive expertise in time series analysis and experience with predicting spatial dynamics using neural network models. I also have knowledge of traditional particle dynamics methods that don't rely on neural networks (e.g. Gaussian processes) which might be of use in this project. I am also competent in control and decision theory which could be relevant to your end application (e.g. collision avoidance, route optimization). Finally, if desired, I can advise you on possible determinants of tanker trajectories within the complete AIS dataset, which would potentially allow for potentially higher accuracy predictions than a long/lat dataset woudl alone. I propose moving forward on this project by (1) Initial consultation on goals and scope of problem (1-3 hours total. My first half hour is free!) (2) Work at hourly rate with multiple milestones per week, tbd based on current state/expectations.

Hey there, I think my experience can be really valuable for the given job. I might be a bit rusty and need some starting time to get back into shape but your task description more or less exactly matches what I did for years at my university (even beyond my diploma). I had a look at AIS (as I didn't heard/knew about it before) but more importantly on the lon/lat data you've mentioned but didn't found too much. Given what I found and the problem description, I think the problem, given in the offer description is ill-posed, i.e. not solvable only given lon/lat data. In order to make an ANN capable of predicting the course of a crude tanker I think you need at least some additional information from the tanker (i.e. size, heading course, speed, m.b. time necessary to change course), in order to enable the ANN to learn that, but that is only my guess from the given problem description. I don't think it is possible to train a ANN only given lon/lat data as they should not be sufficient for any useful prediction without additional information. Beside that I think the project can be kinda interesting, given m.b. some more information, like real-time constraints, (necessary) type of ANN to use, area of application etc.. I really look forward to have a discussion about the topic, the task and further opportunities. Best, Marc. p.s. My name is Ben Cook - I'm a Lead Data Scientist at Hudl (a sports tech company) and I have a master's in Computational Science and Engineering from Harvard. I have experience working with state of the art spatial statistics models and have worked with large amounts of messy long/lat data for an IoT project. Hello. I am a developer with solid experience in back-end development, mostly with C#, ASP.NET and Microsoft technologies. I am BSc in Mathematics and MSc in Software Engineering, researching on Computer Vision. In my thesis I have worked with C++, OpenCV and Matlab. I have also worked professionally with GIS (ESRI tools), Matlab and R, developing a system to track vehicles and tractors in sugar-cane plantations in Brazil. I am currently working at Microsoft as a Data Analyst, where I am applying Machine Learning in applications such as Customer Churn Analysis and Predictive Maintenance. Hello, My name is Thomas, and I am an experienced database developer located in the USA (Texas). I am currently working for an oil and gas exploration and production company, and I do quite a bit of work with lat/long data and geography data types in SQL Server. In the past I also served on a naval vessel, and I have some general familiarity with tracking ships. Neural networks and machine learning models are still fairly new, so I'm still gearing up in these areas. I'm near Austin and have people in my network who can push me in the right direction though. I am interested in statistics and probability, and that interest led me to complete an MBA concentrating in finance. I see this project relying heavily on ideas like probability or confidence levels based on the ship's location, direction, and speed along with other factors such as draught, ownership, and past history along with the known information for likely crude oil properties (heavy/light/sweet/sour), ports and refineries. I see this developing sort of like a weather forecast for a hurricane where the target gets more precise as more information becomes known over time. Your project seems very interesting and I would love to be a contributor. I'd love to find out more detail about what is needed to see if this is something where I could be helpful. --Thomas
