to create simulator of light interference in crystals. You are able to: 1. Understand an optical effect described in schoolbook (it is well described, with necessary equations). 2. Write standalone application with basic interface simulating light pattern of this effect produced by a crystal. The app is preferably multi-platform (p.ex. Flash) or for Mac only.

Hi. My bid is to develop an application to generate interference patterns by simulating light travel through a crystal. Inputs would include the frequency spectra of the light source, orientation of optional polarization filters before and after the crystal, the shape of the crystal, and spatial resolution of the simulation. I propose using the open-source cross-platform Tcl/Tk environment, which is available for Mac (and Windows and Linux). I will deliver well-structured, efficient, and fully documented source code, and installation and operation instructions. Thank you for considering my bid.

The project seems reasonably complicated to me, admittedly depending on the shape of the crystal and its optical anisotropy. In the worst case scenario a model with finite difference division of the crystal must be constructed, and the related matrix equation must be solved numerically. Also, if I remember correctly from my university optics coursework, some of the integral equations in optics related to image formation by diffraction are quite involved, and closed-form solutions only exist for very simple cases, again necessitating numerical integration for the general case. I believe this may turn out to be quite a lot of work, but fortunately I have some experience with numerical integration and matrix equations in programming, so I believe I should be able to build a program in a month. I propose a program with a main window having user inputs for choosing parameters, and a graphical picture in the main window showing the resulting interference pattern. I propose using QtCreator with C/C++ for building the GUI. QtCreator is multiplatform (Windows, Linux, Mac), and requires only recompilation of the code for different platforms, provided that only Qt-classes are used. Resulting program(s) would be standalone executables. I don't have a Mac myself, but I could produce Win/Linux executables, and simple instructions how to recompile the project for Mac.

Once the analysis of requirement is agreed on both the sides with expectations set with benchmarks, the next phase of software development will be started immediately. 3. Depending on the complexity, and future scalability requirements, software design, development, testing and deployment shall be completed in an Agile software development approach.
