Hi, empty cells are ignored, cells with zero treated as numbers. Example: 1, ,2,3,0. Would give you Average equal to 1.5 (6/4), empty is ignored.

Excel 'ignores' empty cells and it considers the cells which has 0 value !

Result of average function is only based on cells having value (zero values as well) and it doesn't take empty cells into account. If i explain it further. Manually if we calculate average it would be like (5+5+5)/3 (total of all values divide by number of values). A1, A2 and A3 =5 and you calculate average in A4. You can manually calculate average by entering this formula "=(A1+A2+A3)/3" Result will be 5. When we use Average function, it automates this process by processing values in the given range of cells. You don't need to specify any division and that's the tricky part because if we mention "A1:A10" as range but only first 3 cells have value then does it divide the results with 10 or 3? Answer is simple. Any number starting from zero (or even negative ones) are value whereas any empty cell is Null so technically that's nothing so excel tells functions not to consider cells that are null except in few situation when function is actually about checking Null cells. So if i translate this phenomenon, lets see the same example again. "=(5+0+5+ Nothing (Null))/Number of values Where Number of values= 3 because we cant take null as value even if its there. Its just to clarify the concept. When there is an empty cell, excel takes it as null and ignores it. Hope I have clarified the use Average function. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks
