New Sage intends to develop a solution that will enable doctors to better educate their patients. The solution will consist of two components: a series of online courses and a course management system (CMS). The online courses, which will be created by New Sage staff, will educate patients. The CMS, which will be created by an outside vendor, will allow doctors to assign a course to a patient and to monitor progress through the course.
The CMS will have two user categories: doctors and New Sage administrators. The CMS will provide doctors with three basic functions: assigning a course to a patient, checking on the course completion status of that patient, and reviewing and reporting the details of the course experience. The CMS will provide New Sage administrators with several functions: the ability to review course usage and to initiate monthly billing for each doctor’s office.
To fulfill many of these functions, the CMS must exchange data with online courses created by New Sage staff. These courses will be Flash modules residing anywhere on the web. They will track how long each user spends on each course section, quiz scores, when certain items were clicked, and what questions or concerns users have. The course will send this data to the CMS where it will be stored and compiled into a final learning report for the user. The developer of the CMS must define data exchange protocols allowing communication between the CMS and any courses created by New Sage.
