The responsibilities of supervisors include:

a. Acting as first line supervisor for the student. To ensure that supervision arrangements and the role of progress meetings are clear and agreed. To give guidance about the nature of the research and the standard expected and to act as a source of academic stimulation for the postgraduate student. To complete a Learning Agreement in conjunction with the student

b. Assisting in the planning and operation of a realistic program of research which could reasonably be expected to be completed and written up within the scheduled period of registration. To advise on the viability of the research proposed by the student and to assist with the conceptual support required for the development of the research.

c. Giving guidance about literature and sources as well as exemplars of good research practice in the specialist field; advising on the issue of academic good conduct.

d. Providing or arranging for instruction in appropriate research techniques or other relevant supplementary classes, including English Language if deemed to be required.

e. To undertake a hazard assessment of the project (where appropriate) as proposed and to arrange through the University the appropriate training for the student to undertake the work safely. To arrange through the University the provision of other instruction to ensure that the student is competent to perform research safely.

f. Ensuring that candidates are aware of current developments in both their own area and the broader area of research. To encourage the student to integrate with, and contribute to the academic community of the University. To encourage the student to become an independent academic researcher in their field. Accordingly, to arrange for the student to make presentations on their research work to their peers and other academics.

g. To provide a regular structured review of work produced by the student. Being accessible to the student at other appropriate times when they might need advice.

h. Creating an open record of progress, showing personal development, achievement and all status reports on the student's work. To notify the student promptly if the work is unsatisfactory and provide guidance on remedial needs.

i. Organizing regular Review of the student's progress and proposed research and to complete the supervisor's progress report.

j. in the case of PhD students, supervisors must organize an Interim Assessment and make recommendations on progress accordingly. Students registered on a Research Award at Master's level wishing to transfer to PhD candidature must undergo a Transfer Assessment process.

k. Organizing the Internal Evaluation of the student prior to final assessment.

l. Ensuring that the student understands the nature and process of examination of the thesis.

m. Making recommendations on the selection of examiners for the thesis.

n. Advising the candidate that the supervisor's endorsement of the request to submit a thesis does not prejudge the outcome of the subsequent examination, which is entirely a matter for the examiners?

o. to protect the student's intellectual property rights (see Appendix 1) and ensure appropriate action is taken to obtain ethical approval with, where appropriate. Ethical approval must be obtained as a requirement of the Learning Agreement.

p. Advising the student on the preparation of material for publication.

q. Ensuring that the requirements over data protection and use of electronic media are explained to students.
