Pangea Flight Path Algorithmic Animation

Hi there

I'm an artist looking to make an animated video work that would use an algorithm to run itself perpetually as long as it is 'on'. I don't have any knowledge of how this would work - perhaps it sounds more like a game or an app - this is why I'm here to ask for your help!

I want to make an animation that looks like one of those live flight trackers that shows every plane currently in the sky. It would need to be able to run on a standard TV style monitor.

The animation should randomly pick a starting point on the map (a real airport location) and a final destination (also a real airport location) on the map. Ideally the animation should self generate these every 5 seconds. So we would need to make a list of lots of different locations on the map that could potentially be either starting point or final destination.

The time taken from origin to destination of each flight obviously needs to be a lot quicker than real time. Perhaps 5% of real time should do it (I would like flights to be roughly around 5 mins max, for long haul).

Now here is the complicated part. I want to super-impose the outline of Pangea (the supercontinent from millions of years ago when most land on earth was one landmass), over the contemporary map. The only parts of the contemporary map visible are those that fit within the outline of the Pangea map. The rest would be the 'Pangean Sea' in a plain blue (see attached images I have made to get an idea).

The ‘rules’ for the algorithm would be:

The parts of the contemporary map that are covered by the ‘Pangean’ sea, (the plain dark blue) would not allow flights to take off, or land.

If a plane goes from an origin that is not covered by the blue ‘Pangean’ sea, and lands in a destination that also not covered (so contemporary map is visible), then it can successfully navigate the flight-path.

If a plane goes from an origin point that is not covered by the blue ‘Pangean’ sea, but the destination generated is covered (so not visible on the contemporary map), it should start the journey until it reaches the destination point, but should explode on arrival.

Ideally I would like to have some text somewhere appear that would state the start and end points of each flight currently ‘in air’.

Below is a Vimeo link to a rudimentary animation I’ve made myself so you can see what I mean.

I know this is complicated but I hope you can help me! Look forward to hearing your thoughts. If you're up for it, we can discuss in more detail to get our heads around it.
