Dear Ashley: I would love to read some of your work, this would give me a fair idea about the challenge that awaits. Your dialogues would fall into Middle English or ME, writing them can inspire unease. Since ME is a composition of English, French (Anglo-Norman) and Latin, many authors would choose one or more. However, that does not mean that they are unaware of the rich history, that is the English language. Composing dialogue can be difficult especially when speech patterns and words are blended to imitate something medieval. That is when we read something that has nothing to do with “medieval”, it becomes something else– a badly written novel to be precise. You may eliminate contractions so that the characters sound natural and formal but that doesn’t work either because the modern reader won’t understand it. You may also have read novels that try to sound “old”, for example: using phrases from Shakespeare. So using “thou” instead of “you” is frowned upon. “Where Goest thou, madam?” – how does it sound? Terrible, just terrible. I would rather change the sentence structure and not the vocabulary, so I am not in favour of words like “doth”. Using them for the sake of sounding older is stereotypical.
