Internet Research for CT and your promo writers’ staff

I have a good friend, Charlie, who is a copywriter. In fact his nickname is CTC, Charlie the Copywriter but he also goes by the nickname of CT. He is ranked among the top copywriters in North America.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit CT. I entered his office and saw him sitting in a director’s chair, hunched over his desk, deeply entrenched in thought, concentrating on his next blockbuster promo. He saw me enter the room and stood up, greeting me warmly. We chatted for a few minutes, then he expressed a concern of his.

“You know, Steven,” he began, “I really wish someone would assist me.”

“What kind of assistance do you need, CT?” I inquired.

“I very often need to authenticate my copy,” he explained. “If I include factual statements in my copy, readers won’t take my word that the statements are accurate. So I need to authenticate them.”

“How do you authenticate your copy?” I asked.

“Internet research, Steven,” he replied. “I need to research the Internet and choose reliable sources which I can use to authenticate my copy.”

“Makes sense,” I said. “But what assistance do you need?”

“I need someone to do the Internet research for me. That would enable me to concentrate on crafting my promo. It would save me valuable time if I could outsource the Internet research.”

CT gave me an idea. Why not do the Internet research for him? I discussed my idea with him. I never saw a more grateful person in my life – as if a heavy burden was just lifted off his shoulders. However, I had to admit to him that I knew nothing about Internet research. So I asked him if he could give me a short period of time to learn Internet research, and I would be happy to assist him. He consented.

I enrolled in a course in which I learned how to conduct Internet research. Part of the course was online and part was printed material. It took me about two weeks to learn what I needed to know. It was extremely interesting and useful. I was well-trained, and when I began working for CT, he knew right away I was the man for the job!
