hi, snowfall prediction is a regression problem with a couple of wrinkles worth thinking through upfront - wind direction is circular (0-360 wraps around), so raw degrees don't work well as a feature, I'd encode it as sin and cos instead, and snowfall distributions are zero-inflated, most days have none at all, so I'd probably go with a two-stage setup: one classifier for snow vs no-snow, then a separate regressor for how much, trained only on snowy days, that tends to give cleaner results than one model trying to do both for the regressor itself I'd start with gradient boosting - XGBoost or LightGBM, they handle tabular weather data well - and validate with a time-series split rather than a random one, to avoid leaking future data into the training set main question I'd want to settle first is the data source, whether that's ERA5 reanalysis, NOAA, or something you already have, since that shapes how much cleaning and alignment is needed before anything else my data and Python work is mostly on the scraping and pipeline side - [login to view URL] - the underlying work of cleaning, transforming and validating messy data is the same kind of problem

Hi there, I've carefully reviewed your requirements and understand you're looking for a machine learning model that accurately predicts lake-effect snowfall accumulation using historical meteorological data. I'm confident I can develop a reliable forecasting solution using the atmospheric variables you've specified. My approach is to begin with data preprocessing, quality validation, and feature engineering, followed by exploratory analysis to identify the strongest predictors. I'll evaluate multiple ML algorithms, including XGBoost, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting, using features such as temperature, dew point, wind speed/direction, 500 mb vorticity, boundary layer height, and mid-level dew point depressions. The best-performing model will be selected through cross-validation, hyperparameter tuning, and feature importance analysis to maximize predictive accuracy and generalization. Deliverables include the trained model, reproducible Python code, preprocessing pipeline, performance evaluation, visualizations, documentation, and guidance for retraining with future weather data. Could you clarify whether your historical dataset already includes the observed lake-effect snowfall totals as the target variable, and approximately how many years of weather data are available for training? I'm ready to start immediately. Warm Regards, Aneesa.

Hi there, We can help structure this as a meteorological ML engagement focused on historical weather data, feature handling, and validation design. Our work would examine temperature, dew point, wind direction/speed, 500 mb vorticity, boundary layer heights, and mid-level dew point depressions to define a sound modeling approach for lake effect snowfall. One point to confirm is the exact target definition and forecast horizon, so we can align the data checks and model evaluation properly. The platform bid covers an initial phase focused on A focused discovery and modeling blueprint covering data review, target definition, feature audit for the listed meteorological variables, leakage checks, validation design, and a recommended modeling approach with imple; wider implementation would be separately scoped on Freelancer. Hi I could train a specific model on historic data using those inputs. I can clean data, validate them train a model and give an inference code. To find a common ground please answer the questions below: 1) How many years of historical data do you have? 2) Is this historical data daily or hourly? 3) Do you want an inference code? If you require the inference code, API for which language do you need? As for me, I have experience in weather forecasting using historical data for glaciologists and farmers. the application was one for the ice melting for glaciologists and another was to forecast the drought for the farmers. both model accuracies were above 95%. I’m happy to discuss the details over chat, and I will respond promptly. Thanks for your attention Archil

Hi There, I understood your project to develop a machine learning model that predicts snowfall quantity using historical weather data, leveraging features such as temperature, wind speed, wind direction, 500 mb vorticity, and boundary layer heights while focusing on model validation and prediction accuracy. For your project my plan is to first clean and preprocess the historical weather data, perform feature engineering, and analyze correlations to improve model performance. This will be followed by training and comparing machine learning models such as XGBoost, Random Forest, and LightGBM using Python, pandas, scikit-learn, and XGBoost, with cross validation and hyperparameter tuning to maximize accuracy. Finally, I will evaluate the model using appropriate regression metrics, document the methodology, and provide visualizations highlighting feature importance and prediction performance. As final deliverable, you will receive the trained model, well documented Python source code, preprocessing pipeline, evaluation report, and visualizations, along with guidance for retraining on new weather datasets. One thing I'd like to confirm before we start: approximately how many historical weather records do you have, and does the dataset already include measured snowfall quantities as the target variable? I'd be happy to discuss your dataset and build a reliable snowfall prediction model. Cheers, Imran

Interesting project, I will build a regression model that predicts lake effect snowfall quantity from your seven features (temperature, dew point, wind speed/direction, 500 mb vorticity, boundary layer heights, mid level dew point depressions). You will get a trained, validated model with feature importance analysis and a clear writeup of accuracy metrics. On a similar meteorological prediction task, engineering interaction features (e.g., dew point depression ratio to boundary layer height) improved forecast accuracy meaningfully over using raw inputs alone. Questions: 1) How many years of historical data do you have, and is it already tabulated or pulled from NOAA/RAP archives? 2) Do you need the final model deployed as an API, or is a Python notebook with saved weights sufficient? Looking forward to talking through the details. Kamran
