If you're using cpanel on the external domain, this can easily be done using forwarders, or in your case since its linux server we can use fetchmail+SMTP relay, the custom POP method you mentioned will make it highly complex and is not suggested unless youre providing some kind of a SAAS. for personal use I'd recommend fetchmail. I recently started facing the same issues, not only stopped recieving it also stopped sending through SMTP. I can take a look and provide a solution. Lets chat
