It's very low power BLE SOC and have good flash and RAM. Channel sounding is supported by this BLE SOC but not by nRF52840 BLE SOC. If you want to go ahead with RF52840 only then the only solution is distance measurement based on RSSI value. I have hands on experience in firmware development for various BLE profiles based application using above SOCs and modules. I have nRF52832-DK, nRF52840-DK, nRF5340-Dk, nRf9160-DK, nRF52833-DK, nRF7002-DK etc for development and testing.
