The fact that they can use a simple wording is likely to mean a higher understanding of a text, than that of someone who needs to use the exact words they've read, or a more complex wording. In other words, I would test their ability to explain concepts "like they're five". So a possible test would be, for example, to explain concepts from the book without using certain words, or put a low limit on the amount of words they can use in their explanations.
