I was reading up on utilizing Amazon to sell a product I'm trying to bring to market. I discovered a forum that someone posted the following; I use the following in a spreadsheet. COGS = Item cost + shipping to you and/or to customer+ Amazon fees+ FBA fess if any+ packaging cost if any Revenue = Selling price + shipping charges if any Profit = COGS-Revenue Margin = (1-COGS/Revenue) I use profit ($) to verify if selling the item is worth my time. I use margin (%) to see my net across several platforms. Typically, most online retailers have a 25% margin. (I read somewhere) If the item is new to Amazon, I will lower the margin to create some traction in the catalog. I have gone as low as 10% for a new product. Mature products without competition, I will try to push the margin up to 35% - 55% You can use the same calculations for your own website by substituting Amazon fees to Credit Card/PayPal fees I am not very good in Excel, and was hoping someone might have expericne with this type of online/retail spreadsheet. here's a youtube video of my product presentation [login to view URL]
