Several weeks ago, I was filming video for a TV project.
We were shooting on a Canon 60D, which uses SD cards.
Before transferring the contents onto an external drive, we attempted to play a video directly off the card (on my laptop, which has a built-in card reader). The computer cited it could not play the MOV file because of a missing codec (which wasn't true, because I routinely play MOV files on that computer - and have even shot footage using a Canon 60D before which played on the computer). We ejected the card, and re-inserted into the card reader. The computer was now saying the card could not be read.
We ejected, and inserted the card back into the camera. The camera could see all the files, and even played back some video, so we know the content is there. We ejected, and attempted to try again, this time on a Mac (the first computer was an PC). The Mac also was not reading the card, and asked us to format it (which we DID NOT).
We ejected and inserted back into the PC. I ran a recovery search on the card (while not writing anything directly onto the card) using EaseUS Data Recovery software. The software located all 45 MOV files, and they were all the correct size. However, they were RAW files. We recovered them onto my hard drive (not to the card itself). I now have all the RAW files, but they still will not play like normal MOV files. This isn't a simple file conversion issue, as I have multiple file conversion programs that can read RAW files. There is another issue at play.
HERE IS MY PROPOSAL:
Reply with a bid for recovery of the full lot of 45 files. There is approx 25 GB of files. If you feel you might be able to fix this, I will send you the smallest file of the 45. If you can get the MOV file to play, we can move forward on the full lot. My guess is that the same fix will apply to all 45 files. I realize that might sound like a bit of a raw deal, but I am not the one who is financing the recovery. My boss would be paying for it, and is not willing to put out money unless he knows we can get these fixed. Thanks!

Not to imply this is the problem/fix, but I did come across what sounded like a potential fix on a forum - I just have no idea how to go about something like this. Here is that information:
As you know MOV files contain some kind of links or packages, called atoms and block called 'moov' in the header which link them. It looks like hybrid cams record this 'moov' section separately after the video recording is stopped. And this is the reason why restoration is so tricky and usually restored files won't play, giving off an error that 'QuickTime can't play this file, because it is a file QuickTime doesn't understands' or something like that. So here is the solution to solve this problem:
Use your favorite undelete software to restore the MOV files from inside the folder 100Media. After that check the card for lost files (you can search for such with PC Inspector Data Recovery which is a freeware, or other program - I think that in the end I used iCare). You will notice that it will contain the MOV files with the same size the ones you restored, but also - for each of them is followed by one extra much smaller MOV file. Now this is the trick - this extra MOV file contains the missing 'moov' fragment. Now you have to use your favorite HEX editor to put it where it belongs. If you don't have one I recommend HxD HEX Editor. First open the bigger MOV file you restored - it should begin with ' qt.... ' something followed by lots of zeros. After a while the zeros should end and the mdat data stream should begin (you will see a mess of characters). Then - open in a separate tab the smaller MOV file you've restored and select everything in it and copy it to clipboard. Return to the tab, containing the opened larger MOV file, position your cursor just after the last zero before the data stream and click Edit - > Paste insert . Then save the file and open it with QuickTime - it's fixed.
please send me the file to my email (not awarded the project yet) and I'll see what happens if this works you install a remote assistance program so I accedere recuperare to your computer and everything, and then you awarded me by pargara work
Hi There Senior Systems Engineer here. I would like to complete this project for you. I can provide you with my certifications as well. Please let me know when your available to discuss further.
Hi.
.mov file is a video for quicktime type, playing in a many player.
that it is not playing is seem to be seen a new codec or wrong option setting of camera ,perhapsly.
thanks of send me one such file.
good.
Hi,
I am interested in just seeing one of these files, I will then get back to you whether I am able to complete the job.
Please contact me.
Kind Regards,
Corbin Spicer
Can you pls send one file, so I can try the fix you gaved?
And do you have both files, the big and the one smaller, like the forum says you would have, pls send both of them?
If it works, the price would be lot less off course, I will decide when I see if I can fix it.
If I manage to do it, for the price of 100$ I will post you a simple instruction video, so you can do the rest with out sending 25 giga of data to me and back.
Best regards,
Aleksandar Markovic.
Dear Sir,
Please provide the smallest file for analysis. And in the note you're citing, the recovery process needs 2 file. there is somekind of folder called 100media. Do you see that in your sd card?
Regards
Hi,
I have done similar work many times. I have specialized tools and software to make this happen. However - there is not a 100% chance that I or anyone can recover the files.
What I will do is take all the risk upon myself. You send me the SD card. I will extract all the recoverable files. If I cannot extract the files - you owe me nothing and I will return your SD card. If I can extract the files - you pay me. I will return your SD card with the files on DVDs as .movs, or if you'd rather send a flash drive I will put them on it.
I live in the USA and I am available by phone.
Looking forward to working together,
Mike
I am a former Digital Technician with the US Marine Corps, after which I have been working as a Camera technician at a NY based rental house, I have been operating and editing in digital format for the past 15 years. I am an owner operator of a Canon 5D MkIII which I shoot in raw, as well as Panasonic HVX cameras which shoot on P2 card in numerous format, so conversion, downloading and format problems and there solutions are familiar to me. Send me the smaller file and let me show I can fix you dilemma, if happy offer me the project at pay my low low bid. Thanks and good luck...
