The report is based on the data was generated through face to face interview with eminent bio-medical scientist from across the country and their colleagues including their institutional heads. We are enclosing two models that were developed based on the data and evidence gathered during the course of the study. The Path to Leadership portrays how an individual transform into a leader while crossing through several phases of their life, where different events, challenges and milestones shaped their path. To achieve the “Path to eminence”. The path to leadership is non-linear and can be summarized into three phases: Early life influences: Evolution of individuals towards leadership – ‘the leadership black box’: and Path to eminence Indian health research leadership has four dimensions (1) personal traits and competence; (2) research management skills and ability to build strong teams; (3) self-awareness and work-life balance; and (4) engagement and advocacy within and outside the host institutions. Research friendly institutional and societal ecosystems is essential to blossom the leadership potential of the individuals.
