You are employed in the regional office of an international firm of management consultants, alongside accountants, lawyers, surveyors, tax advisors and other professionals.
The firm has a client who has recently sold his transport company for many millions of pounds and who is eager to diversify his investments. Although he has no experience of property development, he is keen “to make more money” by buying up an abandoned hospital in the city suburbs and developing the site for housing accommodation.
You attend an initial meeting with this client, alongside other professional advisors as part of the firm’s team, to discuss your client’s development proposal. Rather brusquely, the client says that he is not happy that you should be part of his advisory team. Specifically, he asks why should he pay the fees of a private planning consultant (you), when he knows that the Local Planning Authority employs planners and, surely, as public servants, he can get all the advice he needs from them.
Write a report to your client explaining the many benefits which you, as a private planning consultant, can bring to his proposed development and contrasting this to the role of planners within the public sector.
