You are responsible for the advertising campaign that will accompany the release of Murder Must Advertise. Write a journal response that presents 3–5 points of emphasis you think the advertising campaign should cover. Make sure to provide some support for those choices by reflecting the content of the novel. As well, make sure you are clear about where the campaign will appear (i.e., billboards, social media, television, etc.)
Think carefully about what audience you are trying to attract. Who’s missing? How might aspects you want to emphasize shift or change depending on the make-up of the audience (think: gender, race, etc.)
Don’t forget the “materiality” of the campaign–nest your journal response in things, real-world things that need description. Does the campaign use billboards, the radio, television? How might the emphasis of your campaign themes changes based on the medium or “material” you are using?
Don’t forget the literary terms–you might be able to find inspiration by concentrating on character, metaphor, symbol, theme, etc.
Remember to review the course materials as you set out on this task. The Blackboard lecture in the Week 08 folder entitled “Analysis and Synthesis (essay writing with evidence)” might be helpful given its emphasis on symbol and synthesis.
Some Provocations:
Who does your advertising campaign exclude and why? How does the text restrict audiences or does it?
Does the author’s intent–what they intended the novel to be about–matter when building the advertising campaign? Is it even worth mentioning the author? Why or why not?
How “accessible” (in every meaning of that term) is the advertising campaign–does it give away the ending?
How much do you want the audience to know?
