Make simple TIF converter more robust(repost)

A few weeks ago we had an RAC developer create a very simple TIF resize converter. All it does is resize tif files, using this command line:
convert [url removed, login to view] -resize 'width' [url removed, login to view]
where width is in pixels. It has no UI. It runs from a simple command line, identical to ImageMagick. In fact, this is something we would normally have done with ImageMagick, except that ImageMagick has a known bug that prevents it from resizing some tif files (example is attached ([url removed, login to view])).
The new TIF converter does its job exactly as required, except for one very important problem. It crashes when it encounters an invalid TIF file (example attached ([url removed, login to view])).
The source code for the TIF converter is attached. We need someone to simply modify the TIF converter so that it does not crash when it encounters a non-TIF file. Instead, it should return this error message:
Error: Invalid tif file
We need this fix as soon as possible.
