Movies recorded from television or satellite have advertisements that make most of the movies unwatchable unless advertisements are skipped during watching or removed completely. Removing requires identification of frames that are not part of a movie (for instance, the logo of the channel disappears) and then those frames need to be removed. The challenge is both in identification (it is not always enough to check the logo and the system has to be flexible to accommodate different logos) and removal (video compression is based on transmitting differences between frames, both forward and back so the task is about removing a range of frames but not disturbing the content before or after).
