Read this case study, titled Google in China: The Great Firewall, written by Wilson, K., Ramos, Y., and Harvey, D. (2007) from The Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. (Note: The case study is 21 pages in length; however, you need only read the main article, which is about 10 pages long.)

Now review this recent article from The New York Times concerning Google’s withdrawal from the Chinese market over issues of censorship.

Google worked hard to enter the Chinese market in 2006, only to depart four years later. Google knew of China’s censorship policies and even agreed to abide by these policies. Why do you think Goggle did an about-face in China over the issue of censorship? Were there any external factors that weighed on Google’s decision?
