Virtual teams are increasingly cross functional and operate across space, time, and organizational boundaries with members communicating primarily through electronic technologies. Virtual teams are therefore potentially more complex than physical teams because the interactions can take place at the same time/same place, at the same time/different place or at a different time/different place.
Since communication is the key to all successful teams, your organisation has decided to put together a committee comprised of key players involved in clinical research to discuss how they can enhance communications and accelerate the building of a virtual team to ensure that the virtual project team not only understand their role but also understand how all the roles fit together. You have been asked to serve on this committee and represent the job role of a ‘Project Manager’. The goal of this committee is to identify how you will establish strong ties in order to work effectively together to enhance communications and increase understanding of how all your roles fit together.

• What recommendations would you make to ensure the virtual team gain a better understanding of each other’s role on the team?
