Lessons I learned as a newbie from this project: 1. Be a micro-manager. Even when things are explicitly stated in the brief/bid, it will be forgotten and then you will be blamed for not reminding them. 2. Specify that your project must not be coded in static HTML. 3. Discuss in detail what SEO optimisation means to your web developer. When the final product is not compatible with 3 different SEO plugins, apparently it's still considered "optimised" 4. Do not assume that "handover" means they will give you a project that is easy for lay people to edit / update for future changes. 5. When they quit 5/6 of the way through the first time, take your money and run. Do not assume that they are the lesser evil. 6. If it says can be completed in 3 weeks, budget to triple that amount of time. 7. Always agree on milestone payments in the middle of the project and not pay lump sum at the end. This reduces financial pressure on your web developer so that when time blows out, your web developer will not get desperate to finish and try to pass off substandard work.
