## BIO William Flentje INTRODUCTION Fourteen years of software engineering experience in software development and architecture. Specific experience includes designing and developing network security applications, interactive web sites, client-server technology and communications software. Seven years of experience leading a software development team. Two years of experience as a software architect in the network security realm. WORK EXPERIENCE WorldCom, March 1996 – present Senior Software Engineer • Current assignment is team lead of a development team of five people developing and deploying remote access products and other network security applications. Projects include developing account management solutions for network security applications using Java Servlets and JSP in a Solaris environment and maintaining and enhancing existing server side remote access and security applications in Java and C. Responsibilities include requirements gathering and analysis, overall design, code quality assurance, software project management, and mentoring junior employees. • Designed and implemented improvements to the Cisco open source TACACS+ server code, providing advanced account management and additional security features over existing TACACS+ products. • Proposed projects, provided justifications, and gave all technical input for a $2,000,000 Authorization For Expenditure (AFE) that was approved for our department for remote access and network security related enhancements. • Worked on a team that deployed PKI to over 30,000 WorldCom employees. Responsibilities included vendor selection, developing a registration system and help desk problem tracking and management system, and production deployment. • Led a three person team that designed and developed client side and server side components for web based interactive client server applications using HTML, Active Server Pages, Active X, Visual Basic Script, and Internet Information Server Objects. This included a real time monitor for viewing call traffic for both inbound and outbound calls, report ordering and delivery, as well as call record download for input into third party tools. • Developed code using C and embedded SQL that was responsible for the inbound side of an Operational Data Store. This system inputs up to 18 million call records per day in real time into Oracle RDB databases. Total storage capacity is one Terabyte. • Led a team of four developers working on a real time call record translation, filtration, and statistics generation system. This is an object oriented, C++ project that uses a Versant Object database. Responsibilities included providing technical leadership, architecture direction, hardware guidance, and code maintenance duties. • Designed the architecture for a CD Write platform on an NT machine receiving data from a mainframe. This solved a Y2K problem with the old system and at the same time reduced CD delivery time by two days. Approximately 20,000 CDs per month are produced on this system. Responsibilities included technical leadership, vendor/hardware selection, and system analysis. • Designed and implemented a connection manager for managing high volume server side connections for web based or any other external clients using C and TCP/IP. This model was used for all server side components for a large reporting engine running on an Open VMS Alpha Cluster. • Implemented and tested a statistics engine using C and embedded SQL that ran in a global section (shared memory), in two weeks. This eliminated a production performance problem that caused data flow backups of up to 12 hours on what was supposed to be a real time feed. Sparta Incorporated, August 1995 – March 1996 Senior Software Engineer • Built user interface components using Motif and UIMX. • Maintained and enhanced the graphical representation piece of a real-time war gaming simulation in C++ on a Silicon Graphics machine running UNIX. Found and eliminated several bugs that caused the war game to crash. • Proposed and designed an object data server for real-time data handling and message passing. This was proposed to clean up an Object Oriented implementation that took many shortcuts. Vision Systems, February – August 1995 Consultant on-site at MCI • Designed and wrote real time software that pulled binary messages off of a network, parsed the messages into ASCII components, and loaded the records into a relational database (Oracle RDB) using embedded SQL. Also did data modeling and wrote GUI based tools for this project. Nichols Research Corporation, 1990 – Jan 1995 Senior Software Engineer at the NTF • Developed 3D graphics and GUI for a graphical analysis tool in C++ using GL and Motif. • Heavily involved in designing and presenting demonstrations and briefings to NTF customers and working closely with them to improve products. • Worked as the senior software engineer designing and developing optimized simulation code running on a vector machine modeling the Brilliant Eyes sensor suite for two simulators. • Analyzed system requirements and developed and presented software requirements for four builds of the Brilliant Pebbles and Space Based Simulators and two builds of the Brilliant Eyes Simulator. • Using TCP/IP, developed two high volume real time IPC message passing packages that were used to test experiment code prior to multi agency battle management simulations. Infotec Data Products, 1988 – 1989 Instructional Developer and Programmer • Responsible for designing and implementing Computer Based Training (CBT) lessons. • Designed and implemented question templates used in several hundred modules. • Mentored educational experts on UNIX operations. • Presented with an Award of Merit for Outstanding Achievement for FLTSATCOM CBT conversion. EDUCATION BS in Computer Science, May 1988, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) MS in Computer Science, May 1999, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) ## Area of Expertise HIGHLIGHTS Very proficient with the Java and C programming languages. Familiar with object oriented and traditional software modeling techniques. Strong working knowledge of HTML, Java Servlets, JSP, ASP, JavaScript, VB Script, and IIS Objects. Experienced interfacing Java to legacy code using JNI. Familiar with relational database theory, SQL, and embedded SQL programming using Oracle 8 and Oracle RDB. Developed server and client side communications packages with TCP/IP. Designed and implemented three tier architectures. Working experience with client side LDAP. Knowledgeable with the Entrust Authority administration toolkit. Basic knowledge of development tools including JBuilder, Visual C++, Visual Interdev, and Forte. Experienced with the UNIX, VMS, and Win32 operating systems. Worked on Intel based PCs and workstations, Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations, DEC Alpha platforms, and Cray 2 supercomputers. Designed and developed a server side connection manager that is one part of a system called Interact that won best of show at COMNET 1999. The connection manager was a large part of one of the patents filed for Interact and I am one of the inventors of that patented technology.
