Hey There EFS clearly makes sense when it comes to WP under AWS distributed EC2 env. Regarding OS/PHP and other updates, I'd recommend to use a configuration management tool like Ansible or puppet. And in order to minimise the impact I'd suggest to deploy ansible in a blue-green manner. Besides I'm familiar with all the other aspects of AWS. And I'm a super expert in AWS. There are many services available in AWS ,like RDS,ELB,Route 53,S3 bucket,etc. But AWS charges as per the utilisation of resources ,so i suggest we must configure those services which are required for hosting application.
