Heart Rings- A Gesture Through Time
By Kerry Beetge
Heart rings have always spoken to who we inherently are. In today’s world, it’s almost impossible to make anyone feel truly special and unique but instead of risky gestures there is always the chance to stick to an old classic. Nothing quite says I love you like the symbolism of the heart, even after all these years. That is why they are proving to be so popular and with advances in jewelry design and creation there are truly some beautiful pieces coming to the fore.
It is a simple but beautiful concept; a ring that incorporates the heart design and can be used as a symbol of love and appreciation or just for those who like the expression of love. This item is normally given as a gift to a loved one but also has the potential to illuminate your wardrobe. Rings have an elegance about them that has carried and that longevity, coupled with the symbol of the heart make these pieces both fashionable and sentimental.
Dolce and Gabanna have a wonderful example with their gold and ruby, baroque styled interpretation. It costs $47.95 but is completely classic in an understated and feminine way. The gold gives it an old time feel and a touch of glamour.
The most popular are made with white gold and diamonds so it’s nice to see something a little bit different on the market but that is not to say that the white gold-diamond combo does not appeal. A particularly notable ring in this category is the 10K White gold TDW Diamond. This ring typically fetches $99.99
Of course, nothing spells simplicity and elegance like silver. The nobody can do it like Tiffany. The return to Tiffany ring comes in sterling Silver and goes for $58.00. It’s girly and sparkly and perfectly captures a positive and upbeat attitude.
These rings come in a variety of styles but all carry the same message. You will find some of them are made with interlocking hearts but other popular styles include the charm hearts and the matching heart sets. The most easily available sizes are 5(39), 5.5 (1), 6(48), 6.5(1) and 7(54) but larger sizes are also available.
The Silver heart ring is an elegant way to let somebody know that they mean something to you. There are rings to fit any price range and styles to fit any taste or finger. If you’re looking for a way to show someone something that you might struggle to say then this is the way to do it. It will serve as a memory to them of your feelings and something tangible when they need reminding. Or it can simply be a vibrant way to greet the world each day.

When Asha’s* father died just over three years ago, she was encouraged to go for grief counselling with a professional. “I’d never gone for counseling before and probably wouldn’t have if my father hadn’t died” she says. She knew it would be a battle dealing with the loss of her dad but had no idea that through documenting her thought patterns and working with a therapist, she would be diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder II. This type of affective disorder involves having boughts of hypomania and then major depression. Asha, a sound engineering student from Cape Town, was only 17 at the time. “My family thought it was normal teenage behaviour,” she says. “They thought I was just being rebellious”. This type of common misjudgment can prevent teenagers from getting adequate treatment.
Although Asha would display common symptoms like racing speech, a heightened sense of self worth, poor performance and difficulty sleeping , both herself and her family were surprised that there was a name for what she was experiencing. “Initially I was a bit surprised and afraid at the idea of having to take medicine and be in therapy but I’m glad that I did”.
