Assume 4 rods joined together and in the collapsed form looks like a "W" The "W" shaped 4 rods have to get to the final state where 2 rods are ~vertical and the other 2 rods are ~horizontal.
For the rods to attain the final state, the 4 rods have to connected with links. When the force is applied to the links, the rods have to move to attain the required state. When the force is released, the rods have to come back to the initial state. At and point in time, the structure has to be stable.
Other points to note
The point of application/release of force will be at a single point on the links
Assume each rod is of 1 unit (ft)
The rods/links at the original shape have to be compact ( ~W shaped).
The links have to be almost follow the path of the links and the each link should be ~ 1 unit
We could have multiple links
The rods/links have to move in clockwise semi circular direction to attain the shape
