We have a fairly large website which needs a cosmetic refresh. We are looking for someone who is primarily a graphic artist with experience in web design.
The layout and functionality will remain essentially the same. We want to use CSS to update the look. We have the basic elements of the new look (colors and fonts) roughly figured out and need someone who can figure out how to apply those to the existing site (making it look beautiful--the aesthetics are VERY important in our market) and hand it off to our developer. We'd like to see some examples of design work you've done which show you can do feminine, pretty design.
Our site has a responsive design. Mobile is an important segment of our users. You will need to have experience with making sure that the design elements work on both large and small screens.
The previous designer seems to have used an eyedropper rather than swatches for the colors. We have 5 or more versions of very similar shades of light blue, for example. The new design must use a limited palette of consistent, defined colors. You'll have to consolidate. This will not be a simple 1-to-1 CSS color swap.
This is NOT a WordPress site. We use Expression Engine.
We are using Foundation 4.x. Foundation 5 was released more than a year ago and it was a complete rewrite from the ground up. During the refresh we will migrate to Foundation 5. Experience with Foundation is REQUIRED. Experience with Foundation 5 would be great, but Foundation 4 is essential.
We also need to redesign the layout of our masthead. That will be more of a layout/design job than just applying a new look. The last designer used Photoshop and Dreamweaver and our developer had to cobble it together to work with Foundation. The new masthead MUST be built with the native tools of Foundation.
Some elements of the existing design will need to be redone in smart ways. For example, we currently have JPGs with colored backgrounds for things like a graphic of a colored box with text, but you should create 32bit PNG files which have no background colors on a bounding box element which has a specified background color. Or, just use text instead of an image. Or use a vector image when possible. And so on.
We need someone who can work clean and smart (not just making things look good). We need someone with a good eye. Also, you should understand that our website must be feminine and pretty (though not sticky sweet), because that's the biz we're in. This is really key.
