Hey, I have good experience in developing android applications. I would create a database containing names of all medicines and then that database can be used to populate text field automatically as you type. Database can be included in app itself or if you want it can be implemented as a web service if size of app is already large. But if speed is more important then I would suggest using sqlite database bundled with application. Also if there is any new medicine name which is not available in database then it can be added easily so that it can be populated automatically in future look ups. Let me know what you think. I have already done this for one of my other projects. Exactly a list of medicine, but of course you will need an API for the medicine. The searchable list is no problem. Mesaage me if interested.

What you are describing should be definitely doable with SQL. Safe, fast and reliable. I recently completed a project for a small company which has SQL as a part of it. The app got me my current full time job with the company and it is now being used in our manufacturing line.
