algorithm research

This project is to do a comprehensive review of the algorithms available that researchers have proposed or are in use and available in the public domain (that is, not patented) to support the following areas: 1. Similarity Engines-- Determine the different techniques for judging similarity between two documents/websites. Ideally, the research will help to determine similarity along several dimensions, such as use of similar words, the intended audience for the website, the reason the website has been developed (e.g., to sell something, to offer information), etc. 2. Ranking Engine-- Determine the different techniques available for ranking Websites and their pages. I would like to understand what is available with respect to a much deeper ranking algorithm than the Google Pagerank algorithm, as it might take much more information into account for each website (such as how similar the website is along a similarity dimension), if such algorithms are available 3. Summarizing Engine--Determine the different techniques available to create short summaries (one to two sentences) and long summaries (one to three paragraphs) for a given website and each page in that given website. 4. Visualization Engine. Determine the different techniques available to graphicaly show link patterns (starting with a starting point website) and be able to navigate from a given website to other similar websites. The research should center around engines that can be used within web browsers. ## Deliverables The deliverable is a research report in Word format, that describes the different algorithms available and some level of analysis on each algorithm. The analysis would include the pros and cons of the algorithm and some sense of usage, to the extent it is available. In addition, the report would provide a summary of as much reference material as possible that describes the different algorithms and any tests that have been performed on the algorithms. Finally, the report would include a reference list with links to online documents and have attached any reference documents that are not available online. ## Platform The document should be created and readable in Microsoft Word and any links to online documents should be active links.
