The water chemistry of a ground-water sample can be thought of as a chemical signature that reflects the sum total of all physical processes and chemical reactions that affected the water from the time it began as dilute rainfall, infiltrated the soil above the water table, passed into the aquifer (ground-water recharge), and traveled, sometimes over great distances and depth, to the point of sample collection or discharge from the aquifer. The Geochemist or Water Specialist is expected to use patterns in the water chemistry of groundwater to help refine important concepts about the ground-water flow system, including sources of water, directions of flow, and travel times.
