One cannot know for sure if they are the best candidate unless they are the only candidate. What I can say is that I have worked with OpenGL and C++ for the past 5 years or so. I have written particle simulations for fun consisting of millions of points while maintaining at least 60 frames per second. I also have experience with cross platform application programming, so getting such a program to run on Linux shouldn't be a problem either.
