Re-write Stored Procedure

Hi I have been working with MSSQL for over 15 years. I am fully experienced as a developer and a DBA. Currently I am working at big financial organization in which I am responsible for the BI department. I have designed and the Developed the Organization’s Reporting Database which has been constructed with SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. The database is being updated daily from the core system with txt or excel files via SSIS or with direct connection at mainframe’s DB2 and a numerous of KPIS are being daily updated during the ETL. For isolation reasons the KPIS are replicated to another DB (with transactional replication) which exploits the reports via SSRS to the consumers. Some KPIS are being replicated with merged (bidirectional) replication. Also, 10 Cubes in SSAS are being daily automatically processed and the end of the ETL. Several other reports are daily automatically produced and sent via email to the recipients. Finally I have designed and developed the bank’s crm DB which is published on the intranet. The DB holds full information about the customers (Customers,Addresses , Financial Data , Contacts , campaigns , etc) and covers 4 countries. To achieve this i have made partitions over the country code. The size of the Reporting DB, is about 4TB and consists of about 4.000 objects and the replicated KPI DB is 350GB. Best Regards mpalgeo

Hello sir How many rows should be returned by the stored procedure ? And how many pages are being read by the stored procedures . The code is part of the problem for sure but the underlying amount of data is another thing . If i am to work on this project i will need to work on a copy of the database . If i do not solve the problem you do not have to pay any thing :) Thanks

Hi, over the years I have optimized a lot of stored procedures for performance. Sometimes solutions were simple and not related to the procedures itself. Unless you already have done so, I advise you to check the disk where tempdb is located for available space. Also if tempdb is located on C Disk (operating system) it is advisable to move it to some other disk. Usually temp tables have more advantages compared to CTE and other options, so depending on the tasks of the stored procedure I will check all options and rewrite the procedure accordingly.

the tables will not change put potentially indexes would need to change, also receiving the schema helps but without the data it's hard to get the actual bottleneck

I realized tuning stored procedures where the runtime in some cases could lower them to a 80-90 %. I have experience in these cases.
