Synology DS218j supports PPTP, L2TP / IPsec and OpenVPN servers. A port forwarding option (without VPN) for file transfer protocols (SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, WebDAV) directly to Synology is also possible. But for such configuration, access to your router is required.

Dear, Assuming your Internet service allows it, i.e. your plan is sufficient, this task would take ~15 minutes to complete. If your internet plan doesn't allow it, I'll instruct you on what to say to your ISP to get the minimum required upgrade for it to work and avoid upgrading to a very expensive plan. I've setup VPNs for long as well as for short distances, for example, remote Access (which what you probably will need,) IPSec, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS), OpenVPN, Secure Shell (SSH). From your description I can comprehend that you will need a simple VPN sever utilizing private openVPN certificates and packet forwarding in linux.

We already did this type of installation and configuration for NAS. This can be done without the need of VPN server and the said job will be completed in a day (4-5 Hours).
