I run a web hosting business based on cpanel, so I'll track down the spammy account and kill the script. Thing is, whatever software is running on it, probably Wordpress, needs to be updated so they don't get infected again and the spam starts all over again.

Hello, I have had exact same problem with my server and I resolved it successfully. The problem lies in wrong SMTP server configuration - SMTP server is basically just a relay that accepts connections and redirects mail to other e-mail servers using standard protocol. In order to fix this problem you need to configure your SMTP server so it would only accept authenticated outgoing e-mail. There are several ways to do that. For me to be able to fix this problem it requires either full root terminal access to your webserver, or at least access to your SMTP server configuration files (at the very least you could send them to me) and additional information about your e-mail server like outgoing e-mail addresses.

I run a number of WHM servers and have seen/dealt with a number of spam related instances. You will need to provide root SSH access to the server for me to inspect the logs and locate the source of the spam. Once the source is located it will be disabled. If it is a simple client site that has been compromised you can choose the next course of action: 1) Restore from a known good backup 2) Provide access to any site control panels, I will include up to an hour of work cleaning malicious code and applying updates to close security vulnerabilities 3) Leave the account disabled and require the account owner to fix the problem I can also advise on some standard security practices that will help to keep the server secure.

Working in a web hosting company, I administer quite some shared servers, all of them are cPanel-based. As you may understand, spam can be seen there almost every day, and I'm already very experienced with finding the source of spam and eliminating it. But performing this will definitely require a root password to the server, since a shared cPanel server user does not have enough privileges to at least look at the logs
