IM 3056 Management and Information Systems (MIS) Individual Assignment – 50% 2010/11 Academic Year This is an individual assignment. Submission Date: 20th June 2012 3.00pm. The aim of this assignment is to analyse a case study for a private or a public sector organisation of your choice and recommend appropriate Business Information System (BIS) to enhance their business processes. Tasks:- a. Briefly discuss the main business processes in the selected organisation. b. Analyse the structure and operation of the chosen business or industry using Porter’s Five Forces Model. c. Given your analysis in b) recommend a competitive strategy using either Strategic Radar plotting technique or Strategic Positioning matrix model. d. Identify two computer-based systems relevant to the business processes and would add strategic value to the organisation’s operation. Justify your choose using the Taxonomy of BIS. e. Data Analysis and Business Intelligence for MIS: - [login to view URL] Excel spreadsheet that captures some of the operations of the selected company. 1. Populate the spreadsheet using information from the organisation’s business processes. 2. Convert the data in the spreadsheet into the following information format namely structure, semi-structure and unstructured. 3. Briefly discuss how this information could be used for management decision making and Business Intelligence in the organisation. f. Evaluation and conclusion. The evaluation must be a critically review of how the proposed innovation will contribute to the attainment of competitive advantage as well as create structural and cultural change in the management of the organisation. Your work must have the appropriate cover sheet and Assignment sheet. Marking scheme:- Marks will be awarded based on the following criteria:  Evidence of appropriate selection of material relevant to the chosen case study of the organisation. 10 marks  Investigation/research should include papers/articles, company reports and publications which are accurately referenced throughout and a list of references are included. (These may be downloaded from the internet, but correct reference to the actual issue and not the URL must be made). 10 marks  Evidence of understanding and application of the concepts in strategic implementation of IS, Porter’s Five Forces Model, Taxonomy of BIS, Strategic Radar plotting technique or Strategic Positioning matrix model 25 marks  Data Analysis: - Ability to create and clearly communicate analysed data for Business Intelligence and managerial and organisational purposes. 25 marks  Critical Analysis and Evaluation: Evidence of understanding the management of change and innovation and the structural and cultural impact of the IS in the selected organisation. 15 marks  Draws materials together to a good conclusion 5 marks  The report is well organised and structured. It includes appropriate sections: Introduction, numbered sections, conclusions and in-text references. 5 marks  Writing style is clear, flowing and easy to read 5 marks
