Depending on the exact formulation of your problem, I would propose a combination of an exact method: 1. Delaunay triangulation on a sphere + Network shortest path algorithm (A*, Dijkstra, ...) 2. Branch and bound algorithm if we consider piecewise linear trajectories with a limited number of turns and a heuristic to account for the more detailed aspects of the problem, such as: 1. Taking into account the acceleration and de-acceleration of bigger ships 2. Taking into account the smoothing of course changes (e.g. using splines) 3. Taking into account constraints on the navigation capacities of different classes of ships 4. Taking into account sea currents and weather patterns 5. ... You mentioned using the Boost library; indeed, the Boost-geometry module seems to be very useful for this kind of problem. I am Computer Science student. I am good at problem-solving. For finding the shortest path A* is the fastest way if you have some estimate of the distances.(A* is an informed and best-fit search algorithm). So it always finds the best path. To improve A* I will be using heuristic functions. If you want full details about my implementation approach, feel free to email me.
