Make Oscommerce Mysql more efficient

Require a Mysql expert to tweak an Oscommerce store. It is hosted on a virtual server and needs daily restarting. Large number of product updates were done recently and site worked fine until large number of traffic hit at once. Host admin states: there are open processes code is not exiting cleanly it is overloading the CPU of the hosting package or hitting memory limits queries are getting backed up reference to changing a maxlib packet mysql processes stacking up and proceses need to be killed manually in order to restart. will not stop and restart automatically. Coder needs to be able to streamline existing Oscommerce install to work with in the VPS host account limits.
