Hi, 1) How many records are there (would storing the filenames in a temp table, then going with a cursor trough them with xp_cmdshell rename work) ? 2)If we are talking millions of records - Is this exact way of doing this so important? I mean, wouldn't a simple .net program fit your needs (that way error handling would be so much easier...) as far as the files are renamed correctly?

I have gone through your doc. Yes it can be achive easily by a .bat file and once you run it will rename all the files name with the update one. I have worked on this type of project.. From CMD get the list of all files name into an excel then concat to with the no. extension.. then run the update query.. Do let me know if you like my plan and want to hire my proposal.

Hello, We will have to use the xp_cmdshell function to run a windows shell command for renaming each file. This function has to be enabled on your server, since SQL2005 it is disabled by default. Thank you.

If I were to do this project, I would prefer to write a C# application where the user enters the SQL Server username, password and server address (or just the server address if using Windows authentication) from the user, and runs an SQL query to get the list of fields (ID_Number and extra_code_1) and iterates through the list, updating each file and displaying this to the screen. I would suggest doing it this way, because C# has superior file handling methods to SQL Server. If this were acceptable, I would provide both the source code and executable file. If you would prefer an SQL only solution, and are using T-SQL (Microsoft SQL Server), I would be fully capable of iterating through the list of rows in aview_person and using the SQL file access stored procedures. If you are using MySQL, it would be more difficult, however I am sure I would still be able to produce the required script.
