Develop an app which resides and runs of a usb thumb drive. The app needs to launch automatically when the usb is inserted into the Windows computer. App should give a selection of Backup or Restore to the user. If backup is selected, the user is able to select as many folders they need to backup and click ok. The app can show a file/folder tree with checkbox options so that the user can unselect certain sub-folders within the main folder. The user should be given options such as copy without ACLs (file & folder permission settings (similar to Robocopy /B option). The app then checks the total size of all folders selected and checks if the free space available in the thumb drive is sufficient, if sufficient, it proceeds to zip and transfer each folder into the thumb drive. If restore is selected, the user is able to see the list of folders backed up and select them to restore and then select the location where they need to be restored to. The app then automatically unzips and restores the files to those locations. This is planned only for Windows 10 and Windows 11 OS at the moment. So only needs to support these two OS. Please give a high level estimate of the overall project development cost, the tools/language/SDKs to be used, and an OPTIONAL add on quote if encryption is required. More details on Encryption below: OPTIONAL QUOTE: Encryption has to be on the entire thumb drive level. As soon as thumb drive is inserted the first time, it has to ask user whether encryption is needed, if yes, it has to ask user to setup a strong key/password and encrypt the disk according to any standard FIPS approved encryption standards (AES preferred). Whenever the thumb drive is used subsequently, it has to prompt user to enter the password to unlock the drive and the app before continuing with backup/restore options.

Salutations! I'd like to give you a breakdown of the technology I plan on using, and why I am quoting the amount I have. The app should probably be built with compatibility in mind even if your only targets right now are Windows 10 and 11. In order to facilitate this, I would be writing this app in traditional C++, likely using something like Wxwidgets to allow visual ports, and OpenSSL so encryption doesn't have to be rewritten later. The technology used is the least interesting part, however. Let's get on to the problems I foresee. We'll need to figure out how we want to install this software to a USB. I think that we should forego any type of partitioning magic, and as part of our installer, we simply create a flat binary blob we can encrypt and put a filesystem on. If this sounds UNIX-like, that's because it is! I am a big proponent of "everything is a file" when it comes to this kind of work, as it lends itself to being maintainable and extensible. After we work out the details of the installer, I think it should be fairly smooth sailing. Regarding auto-run, this isn't a feature I'm very familiar with. As I understand it, modern versions of Windows usually make this more difficult, so I'll have to do some research and see what our options are. This might be a feature we have to leave out if it requires some kind of software signing, unless we want to find a way to get our code signed. Please reach out if you have any questions! - Daniel
